The Midwife's Pregnancy and Childbirth Book: Having Your Baby Your Way
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (May, 1991)
Authors: Marion McCartney and Antonia Van Der Meer
Average review score:

For ANYONE who wants to have a good outcome with childbirth
This book was very helpful and informative, even though I used a regular doctor and gave birth at a hospital. I think any book that informs and empowers a woman to help her make the choices that are right for her throughout pregnancy and childbirth is a good book. I have referred to it over and over again, and this is my third pregnancy! My copy is pretty beat up because I have loaned it out several times. Some of the things I liked best about this book:

*The section that helps you know what questions to ask and what to look for in a potential caregiver. It is more in depth than most pregnancy books. This section really helps you find out if the doctor or midwife you are considering is really the right one for you.

*The section that deals with nausea and other aches and pains in pregnancy. The author doesn't belittle or patronize you or try to make you think "it's not as bad as you think" or "it's common in pregnancy". Instead, REAL advice is given as to how to remedy these problems in a natural way.

*The section on dealing with labor. This author knows and acknowledges that labor hurts! She gives many choices on how to deal with different labor situations and what to do when something isn't working. There are a lot of options given here that I think many women are not aware of.

This is a great book for a woman who realizes she is in charge of her body and wants to make informed choices during her pregnancy and birth. Information is given about medication and epidurals, pros and cons. The author does not try to persuade you to do it her way, but wants you to make informed decisions so that everything will go YOUR way!

Miss Fiona's Fancy

The Wild Wager
It was a challenge that Miss Penelope Yarwood, Euphemia Perkins, and Letitia Helmsdale all smugly informed her that the Marquess of Cleveden was at once the most-eligible and the most elusive catch in the London marriage mart. Society's most dazzling beauties had failed to win him, and a newcomer like Fiona had not a ghost of a chace to make him look at her twice. That was all that fiery-tempered Fiona had to hear, and she bet-far more wealth than she possessed- that she would snare the maddening marquess before the seasons end. Now Fiona faced the risk of losing a wager she could not pay-and the even greater danger of losing her heart... This is really a good book. A Real page turner.

All of the Chesney books that I've read have been great. They are funny and actually quite informative about England's regency period. This was no exception.

My Lord, What a Morning: An Autobiography
Published in Hardcover by Amereon Ltd (June, 1956)
Author: Marion Anderson
Average review score:

The most excellent autobiography I've read in ages...
This was a completely personal and revealing work. If you are a fan of Anderson's voice this book will soon become one of your favourites. I couldn't put it down (I know that statement is cliche-ed but it's the truth). Anderson had an incredible struggle establishing a career as an African American opera singer, but throughout her life she treated everyone she encoountered (despite the cruelty and racism of many) with dignity and grace. Her autobiography is indicative of her supreme modesty and love of music and the human voice as the most divine instrument. If you buy it, you will be enchanted. I particularily recommend it for people studying voice.

Never Too Late
Published in Paperback by Bethany House (June, 1975)
Author: Kathryn. Kuhlman
Average review score:

Never Too Late
"Never Too Late" is an inspiring story of a woman's struggle to know the 'ultimate' power (physical healing) of Jesus Christ. While we cannot fathom the power of God or understand why certain situations occur, God has a way of taking us through some valleys so that we may focus on Him and not our illness.

New Interpreters Bible (12 Volume Set)
Published in Hardcover by Abingdon Press (January, 2003)
Authors: Leander Keck, Bruce C. Birch, and Marion L. Soards
Average review score:

Alpha and Omega
The New Interpreter's Bible is a twelve-volume series, updating the popular Interpreter's Bible from a few decades ago. There are several key features common to all of the volumes of this series. First, each includes a two-column, double translation of the Biblical text (NIV - New International Version, and NRSV - New Revised Standard Version) arranged by topical unit or story. Then, they provide commentaries that look at the passages as a whole, as well as verse-by-verse. Third, interesting Reflection pieces that relate the passages to each other, to history, and to current concerns occur at the conclusion of each passage. Fourth, introductory articles for each book are provided that discuss transmission, historical background, cultural setting, literary concerns, and current scholarship. Finally, there are general articles about the Bible, each Testament, and various types of literature (Narrative, Gospel, Wisdom Literature, etc.) are provided to give general placement and knowledge about the text overall.

The list of contributors, editors, and consultants on the project is a veritable Who's Who of biblical and theological scholarship, representing all major traditions and schools of thought liberal and conservative. Leander Keck, of the Yale Divinity School, is the primary editor of the series.

The volumes were published individually, and can be purchased individually, which is a good thing, given that they are a bit expensive. But for any serious biblical scholar, preacher, student, or enthusiast, they are invaluable. A great way to purchase them, however, is by buying the entire set, as is on offer here.

The set includes seven volumes for the Old Testament/Hebrew Scriptures, and five volumes of the New Testament. Interspersed among the first seven volumes are the apocryphal texts. These books are called apocryphal because their status is not canonically clear within the Christian tradition. They are not contained in the official canon of the Hebrew scripture, and so Protestant tradition has tended to leave the books out of the Old Testament. However, these texts were included in the Septuagint, the primary Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures in the ancient world, and so the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox churches consider the texts canonical.

High praise goes to the general editorial staff for working with such strong authors/scholars, that their work fits together well as part of this set while retaining their individual characteristics (much like the writers of the Bible itself!).
